Mazda CX-3 details come to light

The report names no sources, but says the CX-3 will benefit from a new small-displacement diesel engine. The 1.6-liter oil burner will be joined by a 1.3-liter gasoline engine when the vehicle debuts in 2014. Auto Express reports the model may bow as a front-wheel drive offering only, with no all-wheel-drive option.
And what will it look like? Word has it Mazda will continue to leverage the face we've seen on the current CX-5 (pictured). That means the company's shield grille will make the jump, but with more plastic lower body cladding. Inside, Auto Express says the CX-3 will offer buyers fold-flat rear seating for extra cargo capacity.

Weekly Car Care Tip: Brush out the air vents
14.00
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE
These louvers are a real magnet for dust, and a vacuum with a brush attachment just won’t get it all. Take an inexpensive paint brush and give it a light shot of Endust or Pledge furniture polish. Work the brush into the crevices to collect the dust. Wipe the brush off with a rag and move on to the next one.

2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata Named a10Best Car By Car and Driver Magazine
The 2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata has been named to Car and Driver's 10Best Cars list for the eighth straight year and 14th overall since the vehicle made its global debut in 1989. With a nearly 50:50 weight distribution, the small-in-size MX-5 offers a hefty dose of road-hugging handling and superior driving dynamics, making the roadster a favorite among weekend warriors and daily drivers alike.
"The MX-5 Miata sets the bar high on sports car performance and driving pleasure, which is not lost among its increasing fan base as the vehicle continues to be a world record holder as both the most popular two-seat roadster ever built[1] and the most raced nameplate in motorsports," said Jim O'Sullivan, president and CEO, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO). "Sleek, stylish and sporty – the MX-5 remains an uncomplicated sports car with such a visceral driving experience you won't want to take your hands off the steering wheel."
According to Car and Driver, "What keeps the [MX-5] triumphant is not raw performance but a balanced chassis that communicates every nuance to the driver through perfectly calibrated controls." The MX-5 first landed a spot on the 10Best list in 1990 – its first model year – and has made regular appearances ever since.
Powered by an MZR 2.0-liter engine, which produces up to 167 horsepower, delivers 140 lb-ft of torque and redlines at 7,200 rpm, the 2013 MX-5 is available with a soft top or industry-leading 12-second-operation Power Retractable Hard Top, and is on sale now.

Mazda To Showcase Multiple North American Debuts In Los Angeles
Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today confirmed the announcement of several North American vehicle debuts at the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show. The all-new 2014 Mazda6 mid-size sedan, updated 2014 CX-5 compact SUV and face-lifted 2013 CX-9 mid-size SUV will make their first continental appearances. All vehicles are scheduled to be on sale this winter. A global debut from Mazda Motorsports as well as official timing and vehicle application for the U.S.-destined SKYACTIV-D 2.2-liter clean diesel engine also will share the stage.
"It's definitely an exciting time for the Zoom-Zoom brand," said Jim O'Sullivan, president and CEO, MNAO. "The long-awaited, redesigned 2014 Mazda6 will naturally receive much interest but let's not take away from our strong SUV lineup in the CX-5 and CX-9, which are segment leaders in their own right. Motorsports, an innate part of Mazda's soul, will have important news to share and last but most certainly not least SKYACTIV-D will be here. I have no doubt that consumers will look at Mazda's upcoming lineup with wide eyes, stirred hearts and driving inspiration."
Taking nearly identical design cues from the TAKERI Concept, the 2014 Mazda6 follows in the all-new footsteps and clean-sheet-of-paper approach of CX-5 to become the second production vehicle to feature the full breadth of the KODO "Soul of Motion" design language and also fully incorporate SKYACTIV®[1] TECHNOLOGY. Mazda6 will feature a new SKYACTIV-G 2.5-liter gasoline engine as well as new-to-market technologies in the Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system, an automated safety feature designed to mitigate front-end collisions at low speeds, and i-ELOOP, a Mazda-developed capacitor-based brake energy regeneration system for improved fuel economy.
The 2014 CX-5 also will receive the SCBS system, which will be available as part of an upgraded Technology Package for Touring and Grand Touring models. At this time, CX-5 will not be equipped with i-ELOOP.
Both the 2014 CX-5 and 2014 Mazda6 will go on sale in January 2013.
Available at Mazda dealerships now, the 2013 CX-9 receives a mid-cycle facelift, immediately evident in its familial KODO design enhancements to the front and rear fascia. The three-row, seven-passenger SUV stalwart also becomes even more tech savvy with Mazda's next-generation audio and infotainment system that includes a 5.8-inch color multi-information touch screen display, updated Bluetooth® audio and phone connectivity, a TomTom technology-based in-dash navigation system, HD Radio™ Technology, Pandora® and Short Message Service (SMS) audio receipt and delivery.
Mazda Motorsports will unveil an all-new competition race car which will make its motorsports debut in January at the 2013 Rolex 24 at Daytona, the premier motorsports endurance race in the United States. The vehicle will be equipped with a turbocharged SKYACTIV-D 2.2L, making it the first diesel-powered competitor in the 51-year history of the 24-hour race. Upon build-completion, the diesel racing engine remained 63 percent OEM stock. Mazda will be seeking its 24th motorsports class win.

Weekly Car Care Tip: Park in the shade

Of course, a garage is always the ideal place to park your car. But if one isn’t available, minimize interior damage from UV sunlight and heat by always trying to park your car in the shade. If no shade is available or if you find parking under a tree results in bird droppings, use a car shade to minimize the sun’s impact. As a bonus, you’ll have a cooler car to step into on hot sunny days. Car shades come in two basic types: those that you unfold and place on the front windshield and rear window, or pleated types that attach to the windshield posts (with adhesive), window frames (with Velcro), or the windows themselves (with suction cups).

MX-5 Super25 Concept is revealed at 2012 SEMA
The MX-5 Super25 dives deeper into the spirit of Mazda's motorsports DNA and goes beyond the short-track prowess of the Super20, the previous MX-5 concept vehicle built for SEMA. Unlike its predecessor – which was loud, proud and boisterous with its bursts of turbocharged energy – the Super25 was crafted with endurance racing in mind.
Known for its commanding number of grassroots motorsports racers, the MX-5 Miata is the epitome of a light and limber sports car that won't burn a hole through an enthusiast's pocket. With such a dependable starting point from which to build, the MX-5 was an optimal choice for creating a concept with the ability to handle such long-distance, weary-heavy racing. Outfitted with a multitude of racing-inspired exterior features coupled with Mazda Design-created interior touches, the Super25 is labeled with the quick-to-motivate "55" racing number. A significant figure in the history of Mazda Motorsports, the distinction is a tribute to the brand's historic 1991 24 Hours of Le Mans win that made Mazda the first (and still the only) Japanese manufacturer to ever be named champion. The Super25 features the bold yet refined core colors of MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development – black, gray and red. Covered in a commanding Super Red gloss, Brilliant White appears as minimal character details along the hood with a matte Black Mica finish dressing the lower portions of the vehicle from the front and rear fascia as well as along the side skirts. The black, red and white pattern continues onto the glossy black surface of the sports car's fixed hard top with Brilliant White stripes remaining extending through onto the trunk lid. A customized four-lamp lighting pod is embedded just above the modified grille and is equipped with bright-for-the-night (and day) PIAA 40 Series halogens on the inside flanked by 510 Super White Driving halogens on the outside. Super25 looks handsomely poised on 17-inch Volk Racing T37 six-spoke matte black wheels suited in BFGoodrich g-Force™ R1™ 225-45ZR17 tires. A Sparco Evo competition racing seat provides the lone sitting area within the Super25. The driver's cockpit is further customized with Mazda Design-developed Charcoal ultra-suede material featuring Tomato Red perforated inserts. The suede Sparco R323 competition steering wheel allows for even more control and precision within the driver's hands. The six-point racing harness by Sparco ensures the driver is snug as well as comfortable during competitions while an AiM MXL data acquisition logger custom-fitted into the dash offers real-time ECU figures.

Car Care Tip of the Week: Keep the Caps On
You step out into driveway ready to start your morning commute only to discover a flat tire. How did that happen overnight? If the tire valve is missing its cap, the culprit might be a leaky valve. Those little caps keep out dirt and moisture that can cause leaks, so be sure to keep caps on all your tire valves. Another tip: When you replace tires, remind the tire shop that you expect new valves with the tires.

Mazda awards over $350,000 to serve children, education, and environment
The Board of Trustees of the Mazda Foundation (USA), Inc., have announced the grant recipients for the 2013 fiscal year (ending September 30, 2013). As the corporate foundation of Mazda North American Operations (MNAO), the Mazda Foundation has donated more than $8 million to children's organizations, educational scholarships, food banks, environmental programs and disaster relief efforts since 1992.
In FY 2013, over $300,000 in grants will be awarded to 11 organizations that work to enrich the lives of the members of their respective communities. Grants were awarded to:
- Challenged Athletes Foundation, San Diego, CA
- Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research, Greenville, SC
- Dillard University, New Orleans, LA
- Gleaner's Community Food Bank, Detroit, MI
- Hispanic Scholarship Fund, San Francisco, CA
- Mission Hospital, Mission Viejo, CA
- Project Access, Newport Beach, CA
- Second Harvest Food Bank, Irvine, CA
- Shoes That Fit, Claremont, CA
- Student Conservation Association, Charlestown, NH
- Youth For Understanding, Bethesda, MD
Additionally, $50,000.00 will be awarded to organizations selected by each of the five regional offices of MNAO.
"We're proud that the Foundation is able to give back to the many communities in which we work and live," said Jim O'Sullivan, president and CEO of MNAO and chairman of the Mazda Foundation (USA), Inc. "Mazda and its employees are active participants in their communities and by supporting these outstanding organizations we are helping build a better and brighter future for many under privileged and challenged individuals."
The Operation Rebound Program of the Challenged Athletes Foundation program assists injured military personnel in pursuing active lifestyles of physical fitness and competitive athletics. Operation Rebound provides adaptive equipment, coaching, training and competition expenses to troops sustaining injuries in Iraq and Afghanistan and to first responders, helping them pursue an active lifestyle despite their injuries.
The Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR) is a state-of-the-art education program in the Southeast that focuses on automotive research and other transportation and advanced manufacturing issues. As part of the partnership, the Mazda Foundation supports the CU-ICAR / Mazda Annual Graduate Fellowship Program, from which three fellowships are provided to graduate students majoring in automotive engineering at the university. The fellowships are performance-based and renewable for up to three years.
Dillard University, a private, liberal arts, Historically Black College or University, located in the heart of New Orleans, Louisiana, has partnered with the Mazda Foundation since 1998 to fund the Mazda Scholars Program which provides scholarships to students who are majoring in Business and International Business.
In light of Mazda's operations near Detroit and the area's high unemployment rate, the Mazda Foundation has partnered with Gleaners Community Food Bank since 2010. The Mazda Foundation grant supports Gleaners School-based Mobile Pantry Program. This program is an emergency food pantry on wheels; a trailer filled with food for school children and their families, which arrives at the school. Each family receives 50 pounds of food, including fresh produce, grains and high protein items.
The Hispanic Scholarship Fund and the Mazda Foundation award tuition scholarships to Latino students attending the University of California at Irvine and California State University at Fullerton as well as four local community colleges. Mazda has provided college scholarships to over 188 Latino college students and has provided over $670,000 in support to HSF.
Located in Mission Viejo, California, the Mission Hospital provides patients with high quality, accessible and affordable medical and surgical care along a continuum, as well as wellness and health promotion programs for the entire community. Contributions from the Mazda Foundation will be used to fund the addition of two new operating rooms to meet the surgical demand at the hospital.
The Project Access After-School Tutoring and Enrichment Program in Orange County targets school-age youth by providing after-school tutoring / homework help, computer and Internet instruction / access, educational games, reading groups as well as productive enrichment activities, e.g. arts and crafts, physical activities, healthy snacks, character education, teen activities, service projects and field trips. Contributions from Mazda go toward after-school homework help supplies, youth enrichment activities, field trip expenses, and upgrades of the computer labs.
Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County, CA, collects food and distributes it to more than 385 local member charities. These non-profit agencies include senior centers, rehabilitation centers, shelters, church pantries, homes for abused children and many other emergency assistance organizations. The Mazda Foundation's funding specifically helps initiatives designed to alleviate hunger and malnutrition among the elderly, a program designed to curb the effects of malnutrition experienced by children living in poverty, and a holiday project created to provide traditional holiday meals for those who would otherwise go without.
Shoes That Fit, operating out of Claremont, CA, helps build the self-esteem of schoolchildren in need by providing them with new shoes and clothing so that they can attend school in comfort and with dignity. In Southern California where Mazda's headquarters is located, more than 103,000 schoolchildren in need received new shoes and clothing.
In order to demonstrate the Mazda Foundation's commitment to environmental preservation, a partnership was forged with the Student Conservation Association in 1998 to create the Mazda "Save Our American Resources" (SOAR) program. Through SOAR, Mazda sponsors a natural or cultural resource assistant at a national park, forest or monument in each of the 50 states. Resource assistants provide services ranging from trail maintenance and protection of endangered species to guided historical monument tours.
For 28 years, Mazda has been promoting cross-cultural relations between the U.S. and Japan through its contributions to Youth For Understanding. In 2013, Mazda scholarship funding will provide an opportunity for six high-school aged students to spend six-weeks in Japan during the summer. Each year, approximately half of the scholarships are given to children of MNAO employees or Mazda dealer employees. The remaining scholarships are awarded based on a nationwide competition open to all high school students. Students live for six weeks with a Japanese host family, learn to speak and write Japanese, and immerse themselves in daily life.

Weekly car care tip: Be patient during the break-in period
You’ve bought your dream car and now you want to make it last at long as possible in top condition. Here are some things to remember as you pull it out of the dealer’s lot:
- During the break-in period, typically the first 1,000 miles (1,600 km), keep your speed under 55 mph (88 kpm) or to the speed recommended by your car’s manufacturer.
- Avoid heavy loads on the drive train, such as towing trailers, and loading the roof rack or trunk with heavy construction materials.
- Do not allow your new car to idle for long periods — this is good advice for the life of your car, but especially during break-in. The oil pressure generated by doing so may not be sending oil to every part of your engine.
- Use only light to medium acceleration, keeping the engine rpms below 3,000 for the first few hours of driving.

Mazda and Project Yellow Light Fight Driver Distraction
Social media is more addicting than alcohol and cigarettes, according to Discovery News. AAA Foundation says it is this addiction, along with other non-cell phone related distractions, which drive up to 8,000 car accidents each and every day. In 2009, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported 5,474 people were killed in distracted driving related accidents in addition to 448,000 injuries attributed to the same cause. Julie Garner and her family know all too well about the dangers of distracted driving. It is for this reason that she and her family created Project Yellow Light. With Teen Safety Week being October 14-20, this is an ideal time to reach teenagers as they begin the school year.
Dedicated to the education of those most commonly affected, Project Yellow Light strives to show teens and young adults the importance of staying focused on the road ahead. Garner was directly affected by a distracted driving accident when her son, Hunter, was killed in a car accident in 2007. Since the accident, it has been her family's pledge to educate teens and young adults on the dangers of driving while distracted.
"The premise behind Project Yellow Light is to give teens a big voice in reducing the number of car crashes – because they have a unique voice and the ability to get through to their friends, their peers, in a way adults cannot," said Julie Garner, Project Yellow Light co-founder. "Teens will listen to their friends more readily than they will listen to an authoritative figure talking down to them."
Every year, Project Yellow Light challenges teens to create 60-second public service announcement videos surrounding the subject of distracted driving. This year, the topic is, "One Text or Call Could Wreck It All," as provided by distraction.gov. Previously, the scholarships have only been available to high-school students; however, the recent partnership with Mazda has allowed Project Yellow Light to expand their reach to include college students.
"The topic of distracted driving is so important to all of us. As parents, family and friends, it is important that we all look out for each other on the road," said John Doonan, director of Mazda Motorsports, Mazda North American Operations. "Through motorsports representation, we hope to reach a far greater audience and show the public the importance of on-road safety."
Mazda Motorsports has partnered with Project Yellow Light to help bring exposure to the challenge of distracted driving, because their young racers, such as Zach Veach, can have a great impact with teens because they are teens themselves. When Zach was just 15 he developed an Android phone app that automatically responds to text messages while the owner is driving. There are many other young drivers like Veach on the Mazda Road to Indy driver-development ladder who work hard to support the distracted driving campaign in order to greatly reduce the number of accidents and deaths each year.

The 2013 Mazda CX5 Sport: America's most efficient SUV
In the world of the compact sport utility vehicle, the battle of the most efficient offering is heating up but with the ability to average better than 30 miles per gallon with a mix of city and highway driving – the 2013 Mazda CX5 is the current king of the hill in terms of being the most efficient SUV available.
The compact SUV class is absolutely packed with quality vehicles including the likes of the new Ford Escape, the new Hyundai Santé Fe, and a collection of small-ish Jeep products but the Mazda CX5 boasts the best fuel economy in the class with 26 miles per gallon in the city, 35mpg on the highway and an average figure of 29mpg. Those are mighty impressive numbers but in addition to seeing if the CX5 would reach those figures under real world driving conditions, I wanted to know if this compact would satisfy in other categories than just fuel economy. After all, great fuel economy is important but if the rest of the vehicle sucks – many drivers don’t want to compromise other attributes in the name of better MPGs. Luckily, the CX5 doesn’t require many compromises.
I would also like to specify before we get into the meat of this review that my 2013 Mazda CX5 test vehicle was a Sport model with front wheel drive and a 6-speed manual transmission. My test vehicle was equipped with no options over the standard features and this true base model carried a sticker price of only $21,490 (including the $795 destination fee). However, the CX5 offers a surprising amount of content for such an inexpensive and efficient vehicle.
The Exterior
Looking at the outside of the 2013 Mazda CX5, most people would never guess that this is a “base model”. Features like the large Halogen projection headlights, 17” painted aluminum wheels, polished dual exhaust and a sporty rear spoiler prevent the affordable CX5 Sport from looking like a “value model”.
Across the front end, the current design scheme seen across the Mazda lineup (including the newly unveiled Mazda6) is present on the CX5. The big, bold grille gives the upright front fascia a very proud stance while also providing plenty of cooling air to enter the engine bay. The projection headlights mounted high on the front end which help to offer great night driving visibility while black grating is found in the main grille and in the lower fascia openings (these hold fog lights on higher trimlines). While aesthetics come down to a matter of opinion, the large headlights and bold grille give the CX5 a very distinct look that allows it to stand out in a cluttered segment.
The lower portion of the 2013 Mazda CX5 front fascia is finished in a contrasting dark grey that travels around to the side of the vehicle – up around both wheel openings and along the entire side of the vehicle before heading out back. While contrasting plastic cladding can become a point of criticism, the trim on the CX5 bolsters the sporty look of this compact SUV. The elongated greenhouse area sits low relative to the rest of the vehicle, giving the CX5 a very slippery look behind the look hood with a high body line that gives the side profile a very muscular look. The B and C pillars are painted black to give the side view more of an open look as they tend to melt into the darkness of the side glass. I bet that some nice dark tinted windows would really make the CX5 look mean from the side with such a long roofline.
Out back, the 2013 Mazda CX5 features a huge rear window that offers great visibility tucked under the roof-mounted rear spoiler. The lower cladding grows as it wraps around to the rear end with large red reflectors and the dual polished exhaust tips accenting the dark lower fascia area. Finally, the huge tail lights start on the side of the vehicle and flow back into the rear liftgate with integrated reverse indicators, and large stop lamps that are hard to miss with their high mounting position.
The 2013 Mazda CX5 Sport has an exterior design that is deserving of the “sport” designation while also being a base model without looking like a base model. However, the CX5 has a strangely small footprint that makes it easy to wield in small spaces but on first impressions, I was concerned that this small SUV would suffer in the department of interior space but that is not the case.
The Interior
The interior of the 2013 Mazda CX5 Sport is not packed full of high tech gadgets and you won’t find a big touch screen navigation system or an overly elaborate climate control system. However, you will notice that the CX5 Sport (again, this is a $21k base model devoid of any options) offers push button start, remote keyless entry, steering wheel mounted controls for the cruise control and stereo system and – most importantly - tons and tons of interior space. The seating positions are low which allow for a ton of headroom even though the CX5 has a low roofline from the outside. With the front seats adjusted to comfortably seat a 6 foot tall driver and passenger, there is still a ton of leg room for rear riding adult passengers and the long roofline gives rear passengers as much headroom as those seated up front. That long roofline and low floor combine to make for a massive rear cargo area for such a relatively compact vehicle. (There are images of the interior, including the rear cargo area, in my gallery on the right. Click any thumbnail to see the whole gallery.) The only place where space can get tight is between the driver and front passenger where two tall adults may find themselves fighting for elbow space on the small center console. Also, while there are two cup holders mounted in front of the center armrest, if you have two large drinks in those cup holders, they can present an annoyance when shifting.
The dash of the 2013 Mazda CX5 is simple but it still offers some of those features that many modern car buyers don’t want to live without – even when buying an entry level compact SUV. Beyond the steering wheel that features buttons for the stereo and cruise control is a traditional 3-gauge cluster with a large central speedometer flanked by a tachometer on the left and a digital information screen on the right side that displays outside temperature, fuel economy numbers, trip mileage and the fuel level gauge. It is simple but it looks good and it does everything that you expect. While a big infotainment screen is available on higher trimline models, the CX5 Sport comes with a very standard radio that features good ol’ fashioned buttons and knobs but it still incorporates modern features like USB accessibility and iPod integration along with the basics like a CD player and AM/FM radio. The HVAC system also features very simple controls with three large knobs with one controlling temperature range, another controlling air direction and the last controlling fan speed. The large center stack is finished with a large storage cubby just below the HVAC controls and in front of the shifter.
The interior of the 2013 Mazda CX5 Sport doesn’t come with all of the high priced bells and buzzers that you can get on the other trimlines of this sporty compact SUV but with all of the expected features like power windows and power locks combined with items that other base models do not offer like push button start and steering wheel stereo controls allow this low price SUV feel like a much upscale model.
The Drive
The 2013 Mazda CX5 Sport is powered by the Skyactiv-G 2.0L 4-cylinder engine that sends 155 horsepower and 150lb-ft of torque to the front wheels via a 6-speed manual transmission. This configuration offers EPA fuel economy ratings of 26mpg around town, 35 on the highway and 29 combined. During my time driving the CX5, I averaged 30.7 miles per gallon over the course of 8 days of mixed driving and I am here to tell you that in no way did I drive the CX5 in a way that would unfairly bolster the fuel economy figures. I drive hard all of the time and while I have a knack for driving hard and still getting good fuel economy – the CX5 is an SUV that delivers on its fuel economy promises. I was easily able to hit 35mpg on the highway while cruising at Detroit highway speeds (70+) over the course of long drives so those folks who buy a new CX5 shouldn’t have a hard time getting incredible fuel economy.
Traditionally, the thought of a roomy compact SUV that offers 35 miles per gallon on the highway is accompanied by a concern of being painfully uninspiring to drive but in the case of the 2013 Mazda CX5, I had high expectations. In talking to many autowriters who had an opportunity to review the CX5, I found that pretty much everyone loved it. There was a great deal of talk about the CX5 being fun to drive while still offering great fuel economy and having plenty of interior space; especially for such a small vehicle. However, I was still skeptical that the 155 horsepower and 150lb-ft of torque would be anywhere near enough power to make an SUV “fun to drive” for me.
That skepticism ended quickly during my first stint driving the 2013 Mazda CX5.
I should start by saying that I think that every vehicle should offer a manual transmission but the 2013 Mazda CX5 is one of the few vehicles in the class which offers a chance to truly row your own gears. Many competitors have automatic transmissions with gadgetry like paddle shifters and basic shift control with the push of a button or the shifter itself but a manually shifter SUV has become a true rarity. I believe that to be one of the features that makes the CX5 so much fun to drive. The clutch of the CX5 is far friendlier than many “entry level” manual transmission offerings so someone who is new to shifting for themselves should be able to get a hang of driving the CX5 quickly (as manual transmissions go). The manual transmission allows the CX5 to make better use of the 155 available horsepower, improving acceleration and honestly making the CX5 a fun little SUV to drive while also being one of the main reasons that this compact SUV is able to hit 35 miles per gallon and average better than 30mpg combined.
Manual transmission aside, the 2013 Mazda CX5 offers a nice smooth ride on the highway with only minimal levels of “road noise” transferring into the cabin at highway speeds. The suspension allows the CX5 to handle well in tight turns while the small overall size of the vehicle make it easy to maneuver in even the tightest driving and parking situations. Regardless of whether you are on the open road or driving around the city, the CX5 feels more like a compact sedan than a compact SUV with no feeling of being in a vehicle that is looming over the others around it. When combined with the fine art of shifting the manual transmission to optimize performance, the suspension and chassis of the CX5 will allow some spirited cornering that can be hard to find in this segment.
The 2013 Mazda CX5 isn’t a vehicle that is going to tear up any racing leagues but this super efficient sport utility vehicle allows strong enough acceleration and confident enough handling that the owner can have a vehicle that offers 35 miles per gallon while also providing that special “fun to drive” factor.
The Final Word
The 2013 Mazda CX5 Sport draws a ton of attention for the fact that it received an EPA fuel economy rating of 35 miles per gallon on the highway and in my own testing, I found that 30+ mpg is very realistic over the course of a tank of gasoline. In addition to being the most efficient SUV available in the US, this entry level model carries a price of just over $21k but it offers this affordable efficiency without cutting back in other areas. The entry level CX5 Sport offers features inside and out that are traditionally found on higher level (and higher price) trimlines while also offering loads of passenger and cargo space, enough power to make the drive enjoyable and a sharp looking exterior design.
Unlike other compact SUVs that offer their best fuel economy only in higher priced trimlines with expensive engine options, the standard 2.0L Skyactiv engine mated to a 6-speed manual transmission allows a buyer to save money at the dealership and at the pump without compromising the overall driving experience. Someone looking for a roomy compact SUV with incredible fuel economy capacities, a confident ride, solid acceleration and amenities that are generally found only in more expensive models – the $21,490 Mazda CX5 Sport should definitely be on your short list.

2013 Mazda CX-9 Gets Design Update, Active-Safety Features
Take a quick look at the new 2014 Mazda CX-9 from the front and you might think it's an all-new version. By adopting Mazda's Kodo 'soul of motion' design theme—as featured in the 2013 Mazda CX-5—the automaker has given the 2013 Mazda CX-9 a new look, at least from the front views it's provided in early photos. Yet it's clear that from the side the profile—as well as details like the wheel-well bulges and door handles—carry over to the new version.
We can't see anything of the interior with the early images Mazda released, but the automaker notes “enhancements in craftsmanship and interior design.” It's likely that the CX-9 will get significant updates to audio and navigation, with a voice-command system available, and several active-safety features--Forward Obstruction Warning System, Lane Departure Warning System, and High Beam Control System—will be offered.
Mazda says that the CX-9 will carry over with Mazda's existing 3.7-liter V-6 'MZI' engine and six-speed automatic transmission.
Expect to see the new CX-9 reach dealerships late this year, as a 2013 model.

Mazda Enters the Midsize Fray With Sleeker Mazda 6 Sedan
By PAUL STENQUIST l August 29, 2012, 2:12 pm

"Mazda introduced its 2014 Mazda 6 at the Moscow motor show on Tuesday. The redesigned midsize sedan will mix it up with recently updated entries from Ford, Chevrolet, Nissan, Honda and Toyota. Judging by the details released by Mazda at the show, the 6 seems well equipped for the fight.
Unlike the recently introduced Mazda CX-5 crossover, which bore just a passing resemblance to the Minagi design exercise that preceded it, the new 6 appears to be quite faithful to the Takeri sedan concept first shown at the Tokyo motor show in 2011. In keeping with the automaker’s practice of ascribing mythical language to its engineering and design principles, both cars bear the influence of Kodo, or soul of motion, the philosophy that displaced Nagare, Mazda’s previous design language.
Like the Takeri concept, the 6 bears pronounced front fender arches, sharply creased character lines that sweep upward from the bottom of the front wheel wells, a smoothly arcing roofline over a crescent of side window glass and a gaping front grille that departs a bit from the much-maligned “Mazda smile.” The car has a slippery, low-slung look that is borne out by a 0.26 coefficient of drag.
The wheelbase of the sedan has increased from the 109.8 inches of its predecessor to 111 inches. This aligns it more with larger midsize offerings like the 2013 Ford Fusion at 112.2 inches, while eclipsing that of the 2013 Nissan Altima, at 109.3 inches. Mazda said the longer wheelbase allowed for a roomier interior and more ample storage space.
Like other recently introduced Mazda vehicles, the sedan incorporates the automaker’s Skyactiv suite of efficiency-enhancing technologies. The centerpiece of Skyactiv is power-plant engineering that relies on extremely high compression ratios, up to 14:1 in some iterations; specially tuned exhaust plumbing that reduces combustion temperature; variable valve timing; and direct fuel injection to deliver fuel economy and performance to rival hybrid powertrains and turbocharged direct-injection engines. The Russian specification of the sedan receives two Skyactiv engines: a 134-horsepower 2-liter 4-cylinder unit and a 189-horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder.
Aside from high-compression engines, the Skyactiv technology package includes lightweight body and chassis units, as well as automatic transmissions that combine a multiplate clutch and a torque converter.
The Takeri concept vehicle that made the auto-show rounds over the last year was equipped with a diesel engine. The automaker has not indicated if a diesel would be offered in the new sedan.
The Russian-specification 6 is also equipped with i-Eloop, a capacitor-based regenerative braking system that Mazda said would improve fuel economy by reducing the vehicle’s dependence on traditional battery-charging technology. The car also has engine-shutdown technology.
Mazda said specifications, pricing and availability information for the North American market would be announced at a later date."

THE ALL-NEW 2014 MAZDA6 SEDAN MAKES GLOBAL DEBUT IN MOSCOW
Mazda to Showcase Redesigned Sedan With All-New Technology and Safety Features
Aug 28, 2012

"MOSCOW, Aug. 28, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- From design concept to final production, the all-new 2014 Mazda6 has been a feast for the eyes. Spawning from its TAKERI Concept beginnings, which made its global debut at the Tokyo Motor Show last November, the redesigned Mazda6 was adapted for more practical wheels-to-road use yet did not sacrifice style or its appeal of being a game-changer in the mid-size vehicle segment. The second Mazda to feature the full suite of SKYACTIV®[1] technologies, the Mazda6 will launch in Europe this year with an added slew of all-new safety features and fuel efficiency-improving technologies. The vehicle is expected to go on sale in the U.S. and Canada in early 2013.
Similar to TAKERI, the Mazda6 features a bold new front fascia with a five-point "signature wing." Part of the KODO "Soul of Motion" design language, this new family look evokes a tempered aggression, controlled yet taut beneath the three dominant character strokes that flow alongside the sculpted body. The Mazda6 sits on a 111-inch long wheelbase, allowing for a roomier interior and ample storage space. Compared to the previous generation, the front wheels have been pushed forward nearly four inches in relation to the A-pillar, resulting in reduced overhang while the rear deck has been shortened, further enhancing the vehicle's lower, leaner and longer stance.
Under the hood of the Russian-specification Mazda6 is a SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter gasoline engine that offers 134 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 155 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. The SKYACTIV-G 2.0 can be paired with either the SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual transmission or SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic transmission. A SKYACTIV-G 2.5-liter gasoline engine also will be available in the Russian market and boasts 189 horsepower at 5,700 rpm and 189 lb-ft of torque at 3,250 rpm. The SKYACTIV-G 2.5 will be available with the SKYACTIV-Drive transmission. Final specifications for other global markets, including the U.S. and Canada, will be disclosed at a later date.
To feed the rest of one's senses, the interior offers a driver-oriented cockpit with knobs and controls within intuitive reach. The luxurious interior overwhelms in its clean simplicity and quality materials. Cavernous but comfortable, the 2014 Mazda6 features a new instrument panel in two new metallic finishes – Bordeaux and Dark – as well as soft fabrics on frequently touched surfaces such as the door trim and along the instrument panel. The instrument cluster is presented with white scale markings on a dark spindle groove-and-honeycomb pattern to accentuate clarity and readability. An encircling metal ring provides a distinctive finishing touch.
Wrapped in an all-new "Soul Red" metallic paint finish, itself developed through a unique technological process that balances depth and shading while providing vividness, the Mazda6 rests upon 19-inch, five-double-spoke alloy wheels, which offer added stability to the dynamics of the vehicle's SKYACTIV-Body and SKYACTIV-Chassis. The SKYACTIV-Body structure utilizes more ultra-high tensile steel resulting in fewer materials used (and a lighter weight) while increasing torsional rigidity by almost 30 percent. The SKYACTIV-Chassis has a finely tuned front strut and rear multi-link suspension system, which deliver agile driving performance in the low- to mid-speed ranges and precise handling in high-speed driving. Engineering efforts also improved NVH performance to target class-leading quietness as well as optimizing the under-floor design to further improve aerodynamic airflow to a class-leading 0.26 coefficient of drag (Cd), which also contributes to increased fuel economy.
Additional environmentally-conscious, fuel-efficient systems in the Mazda6 include the production debut of "i-ELOOP," the Mazda-engineered, world's-first capacitor-based regenerative braking system. In real-world driving conditions, which feature frequent acceleration and braking, i-ELOOP will improve fuel economy by up to 10 percent. The "i-stop" idling stop system also is available and offers a class-leading engine restart time of 0.35 seconds. The accelerated restart equates to a smoother, barely noticeable pick-up as well as significant improvement in stop-and-go fuel economy. Also, an award-winning single-nanotechnology in the catalyst improves the exhaust gas after-treatment process and reduces the amount of precious metal required.
For the Russian-specification 2014 Mazda6, all-new safety features coupled with the brand's current array of advanced technologies offer an added sense of security and stability. Providing hawk-eyed vision in the moonlight, signature LED headlights paired with halo ring light guides are adopted for the first time in a Mazda production vehicle. With the available Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS), the headlights beam and embrace curves on the road just as the vehicle does for added visibility.
Other featured safety systems include:
- High-Beam Control (HBC): Uses a sensor to detect oncoming vehicles and automatically adjusts between high and low beam to avoid blinding other drivers at night.
- Hill Launch Assist (HLA): Helps prevent the vehicle from rolling backwards while the driver's foot moves from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal when taking off on a hill.
- Emergency Stop Signal (ESS): Causes the hazard lights to rapidly flicker on and off in the event of panic braking at speeds of 31 MPH or higher in order to warn vehicles behind.
- Rear Vehicle Monitoring (RVM): Goes into effect at speeds of 19 MPH or higher and detects vehicles approaching from behind or driving in the blind spot area on either side, and alert the driver should s/he turn on the indicator signal to change lanes.
- Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS): Uses a camera to judge the position of lines on the road and alerts the driver of unintentional lane departures, thus minimizing the risk of collision due to driver inattention or fatigue.
- Smart City Brake Support (SCBS): Uses a near-infrared beam sensor to help prevent collisions and, in cases where prevention is not possible, reduce the impact of frontal collisions at low speed (up to 19 MPH) by automatically applying the vehicle's brakes.
More information on the 2014 Mazda6 will be announced during a press conference on Wednesday, August 29. All specifications and technologies disclosed will be specific to the Russian market."

Mazda MX-5 GT4 Makes 320 HP, Costs $197,000
Luke Vandezande | Aug 22, 5:30 PM
"Despite having the same engine as its street-legal parent, this Miata makes 320 hp through a potent turbo kit and brags a low 2,204-lb curb weight. Built by U.K.-based Jota Sport, Mazda is selling the fully homologated GT4 car to compete with the likes of Aston Martin and Lotus.
Little is left of the original roadster which not has an FIA spec roll cage and loads of aero parts like a carbon fiber rear diffuser and front lip, a single racing seat and a six-speed sequential gearbox with paddle shifters.
As is standard practice with race cars, the interior has been entirely scrapped in favor of carbon fiber to save weight."

2013 Mazda CX-5
By Tom Strongman Posted on Sat, Aug. 18, 2012 12:00 AM
2013 Mazda CX-5
Engine: 2.0-liter, 155-horsepower four-cylinder
Transmission: Six-speed automatic, all-wheel drive
Wheelbase: 106.3 inches
Curb weight: 3,426 pounds
Base price: $28,295
As driven: $30,415
MPG rating: 25 city, 31 highway
At A Glance
Point: The new CX-5 is nicely styled, has sharp handling and delivers exceptional fuel economy for its segment. The cabin is comfortable and well equipped.
Counterpoint: The 2.0-liter engine feels a bit anemic for a vehicle of this size.
Compact crossover utility vehicles are my favorite because they marry the function of an SUV with the handling and fuel economy of a small sedan or station wagon. Plus, these mini-CUVs actually have enough cargo space to accommodate the needs of most buyers, with the exception of those that need a third seat for carpooling.
Mazda’s all-new CX-5 has fresh styling with a new design theme that is called KODO, Soul of Motion. It is a welcome departure from Mazda’s grinning face grille.
The CX-5 reflects the company’s fun-to-drive philosophy by showcasing sharp and responsive handling while returning excellent fuel economy.
The CX-5 comes in Sport, Touring and Grand Touring models, in either front-wheel or all-wheel drive. Prices start at $20,695 for the Sport, $23,895 for the Touring and $27,045 for the Grand Touring. The Sport can be equipped with a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission, but the Touring and Grand Touring are only available with the automatic. I drove an all-wheel-drive Grand Touring and its base price was $28,295.
For Midwestern winters, I would choose all-wheel drive over front-wheel drive, but buyers in southern climes will be happy with front-wheel drive.
The CX-5 uses what Mazda calls Skyactiv Technology to achieve fuel economy that is rated at 26 miles per gallon in the city and 35 on the highway for the front-wheel-drive version with the six-speed manual transmission. The highway number is mighty impressive for a vehicle with such a tall and boxy profile.
All-wheel-drive models with the automatic transmission are rated at 25 city and 31 highway, which is still quite good compared to competitors such as the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 and Hyundai Santa Fe.
Skyactiv is more of a strategy than a technology. Mazda uses high-strength, lightweight steel for the chassis to keep weight down, and that means a small, highly efficient engine can be used. The one used in the CX-5 is a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder that delivers 155 horsepower. It has an aluminum block, dual overhead cams, direct fuel injection, variable cam timing and a high compression ratio. It runs on regular fuel.
A 2.0-liter engine is small for a vehicle this size, and it shows when you load the vehicle with people or need a strong burst of power for climbing hills or entering the freeway. The hot-selling Honda CR-V has 30 more horsepower, and the Toyota RAV4 has 24 more. Clearly, Mazda chose fuel economy over performance, and that may be wise in a time of expensive gasoline.
The CX-5 makes driving actually fun because it has such nice handling. It acquits itself at least as well as, and sometimes better than, the Mazda3, and that’s not an easy task for a vehicle that is relatively tall.
Ride quality is an excellent combination of comfort and control. The electronic power steering has a nice feel, and body roll is held in check nicely during cornering. The tight suspension that yields good handling is not so firm that it makes the ride harsh or choppy.
Compact crossovers are about function and versatility, and that means the interior is a key to how useful the vehicle is over a long period of time. The CX-5 shines in its ability to carry various-sized cargo, be comfortable and offer popular convenience items.
The Grand Touring test car was equipped with the technology package that included GPS navigation, satellite radio, high-intensity headlights and keyless ignition. Other standard features included stability control, heated front seats, Bose audio system, Bluetooth connectivity and dual-zone climate control.
The leather-trimmed sport seats had excellent lateral support and were quite comfortable.
One or both sides of the rear seat can be folded.
Other safety features include anti-lock brakes with brake assist, traction control and front, side and side-curtain airbags.
Price
The base price of the test car was $28,295. Options included navigation, high-intensity headlights, satellite radio, keyless ignition and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The sticker price was $30,415.
Warranty
Three years or 36,000 miles with a five-year, 60,000-mile powertrain warranty"

Mazda: We Want Each New Car To Be 220 Pounds Lighter
By Antony Ingram; Aug 7, 2012

"While all automakers realise the benefits of making their cars lighter, it's only been relatively recently that some models have actually weighed less than their predecessors.
Demands for saftey, equipment, larger engines, more comfort and more space have pushed vehicle weight up so far that some cars are fifty percent heavier than their equivalent from 20 years ago.
Mazda started reversing this trend several years ago, and now it's making a bold statement: it wants to eliminate 220 pounds of weight every time it re-designs one of its models.
That will obviously become increasingly difficult with each new generation, but it's a realistic proposition for at least the next couple, and Mazda sees it as an important step in meeting fuel economy and emissions regulations.
Speaking with Automotive News, Mazda vehicle development engineer Dave Coleman explained that Mazda "focused so much on the low-hanging fruit that we still have a lot of room."
That suggests that Mazda's current techniques, such as ensuring every nut and bolt it a little lighter than before, and preventing weight from climbing too much--the MX-5 Miata sports car has only increased around 15 percent in over two decades, much less than the norm--are only the start.
Use of high-strength steel, and using less steel where strength isn't an issue, is another technique Mazda has used and will continue to use to reduce weight.
Vehicle downsizing may be another option. The current Mazda2 is smaller and over 200 pounds lighter than its predecessor, which wasn't sold in the U.S.
Materials technology may also play a part. The MX-5 has always used an aluminum hood to ensure a large, usually-heavy part weighs less, and it's possible that aluminum and carbon fiber will play a larger part, as more widespread use brings down the cost. BMW agrees, and is set to use more aluminum in future models.
As we already know, reducing weight is a virtuous circle too, enabling manufacturers to fit smaller, lighter, more economical engines without sacrificing the performance that buyers desire.
Mazda may not be able to keep up the 220-pound fat-fighting for too long, but you can be sure that the next generation of Mazdas will be considerably lighter than the last."
