Since 1984, The Mazda Foundation has funded Youth for Understanding (YFU) in order to promote cross-cultural understanding between America and Japan. The YFU scholarship from the Mazda Foundation, which is valued at $9,895.00, provides round-trip domestic and international air travel, placement with a specially selected host family in Japan for six weeks, a pre-departure orientation and support services provided by YFU in Japan and the U.S.

This year's select group of students will join the more than 250,000 young people who have participated in an exchange program with YFU.

The program begins at the University of California, Berkeley, with a three-day pre-departure orientation, which emphasizes Japanese language, culture and etiquette. Students then fly to Japan, where they learn about Japanese culture by living with Japanese host families, participating in local activities, visiting schools and one-on-one interaction with their host families. The students' Japan experience will culminate with a visit to Mazda's Headquarters in Hiroshima where they will have the opportunity to meet with Mazda Motor Corporation engineers and designers.

The Mazda Foundation is proud to be able to provide this truly unique opportunity to such a diverse group of high school students.

2013 Mazda3

Conviction. Creativity. Courage. They're what inspired Laird Hamilton to devise a simple-yet-ingenious way to catch monster waves and change the sport forever. And what led us to engineer the 2013 Mazda3 with a powerful, fuel-efficient SKYACTV-G engine for an impressive EPA-estimated 40 highway MPG. This is the Mazda Way, and this is the Mazda3.

Thank you to Hugo for this outstanding and thoughtful review of our dealership!

"We stopped at Tracy Mazda. At Tracy Mazda, we met Michael Hallsted. Warm fella'. During the test-drive, my girls immediately appreciated the difference in interior quality, cargo space professional grade of this vehicle. On our way back to the showroom I explained to Michael, that I had spotted a vehicle at the Dublin store with the proper specs, but had felt awkward there. He explained to me that both store belong to the same owner and that the policy is to take care of the customers. We sat down and I gave him the papers I had worked on with Michael B. at Dublin. Michael H. was very courteous and personable. While we discussed price, option, experience, and other things of life my two young daughters were playing "out-run" on the car simulation console. The environment is really pleasant. The few hours we spent wrapping things up were surprisingly agreeable. By the end of the day, we bought this beautiful Mazda and came home knowing we were treated kindly and fairly. I came back to pick up the car the next day, and Michael H. had filled up with a full tank of gas.

In summary, shopping for the perfect car for our family was really hard, and most dealers don't want to give you any quote or negotiate any deal. The salesman on the floor is put in a position where he has to proxy the offer to the sales manager, so he plays ping-pong on any offer. This process is really stressful for the consumer, and unless you are a savvy buyer, you are always left with the feeling that you've been taken advantage of.  At Tracy Mazda, this was the opposite. I felt respected and gave them my business. I would certainly consider coming back and take advantage of the loyalty discount for my next Mazda. Thank you Michael H  !" -Hugo

Mazda reveals new 'Game Changers' advertising campaign

Looking to highlight its unique and sporty mindset, Mazda is getting ready to launch its biggest advertising campaign since "Zoom-Zoom" became its tagline in 2000. The new campaign, entitled "Game Changers," will begin in May, and rather than focusing on its sporty past – like it did with Zoom-Zoom early on – the new ads will look at recent advancements made in building its future, including Skyactiv technologies and its new diesel race program, both of which involve its excellent new Mazda6 sedan.

As a part of the ads, Mazda will showcase game changers from the sporting world, including Dick Fosbury who changed how competitors perform the high jump and Laird Hamilton, who redefined how surfers attacked big waves. It doesn't sound like Zoom-Zoom is going away, but "Game Changers" will definitely feature heavily in the Japanese automaker's marketing moving forward.

Car Care Tip of the Week: Keep leather from drying out and cracking!

Leather cars seats are durable and don’t require a lot of maintenance. After a few years, however, the seats can become soiled. Use leather cleaner to remove dirt and stains. Then apply a leather protectant formulated for pigmented or top-coated grain leather (the leather used for most leather car upholstery). Protectants will resist stains and make the upholstery easier to clean in the future. Choose a protectant that includes conditioners to keep your leather supple.

Car Care Tip of the Week: Set A Schedule To Clean Out Your Car

If you keep telling yourself you’ll empty your car of various unnecessary items (the blanket for the picnic two Saturdays ago, perhaps?), you might find it’s still there in three months. Set a simple schedule. Really simple. Like, “I’ll straighten up my car every Friday and wash it Saturday morning.” This method truly works wonders.

Car Care Tip of the Week: Clean the floor mats!

If you’re washing your car this week, don’t forget to drag out the floor mats and blast them with the hose. This will dislodge dirt particles that, if allowed to build up, will grind holes in your mats.

Mazda Diesel Sedan Wins Rolex Grand-Am Race

Mazda Motor Corp. said one of its diesel-powered Mazda6 sedans won the Rolex Grand-Am GX race at the Road Atlanta race track. The GX class is a new category in Grand-Am racing in which showroom-style cars compete with relatively few modifications.
GX cars also showcase new technological developments that often make their way into road cars, making the class especially interesting for tech-minded racing fans. Mazda’s win reflects advances across the auto industry that have turned once-sluggish diesel engines into high-performance power plants.
The first-place Mazda was powered by a turbocharged diesel engine based on the one used in the production diesel Mazda6. Mazda said its car is the first diesel to win a Grand-Am event. The #00 car, sponsored by Visit Florida, took first place and a similar Mazda finished in third. Second place went to a Porsche Cayman.
While we don’t typically associate diesel sedans with racing, Mazda was far from an underdog in the Grand-Am event. The company has been developing the Mazda6 racer for years and has a long history of success on the track, from an overall win at the Le Mans 24 Hours race in 1991 to decades of competing with its road cars in numerous Sports Car Club of America classes

Car Care Tip of the Week: Lighten up your key chain!

Does your car key share a chain with a dozen or more other keys? That’s a pretty heavy load hanging off the car key when it’s in the ignition. The weight, combined with bouncing while you drive, can wear out the tumblers inside the ignition and eventually lead to ignition switch failure.

Mazda President and CEO Takashi Yamanouchi Receives Order of the Aztec Eagle Award!

Mazda Motor Corporation announced that Representative Director and Chairman of the Board, President and CEO, Takashi Yamanouchi has been awarded the Order of the Aztec Eagle. The order is the highest decoration bestowed upon foreign citizens by the government of the United Mexican States. Mexican President, His Excellency Enrique Peña Nieto, presented the award at a ceremony held today at the Embassy of Mexico in Tokyo.

Takashi Yamanouchi said at the ceremony, "It is a great honor to receive the prestigious Order of the Aztec Eagle award. Mazda's new plant in Mexico is due to start operations in the fourth quarter of fiscal year ending March 2014 and construction is progressing smoothly. Our hope is that the people who will work at the plant will come to understand Mazda's approach to making cars and work for the company with pride. Furthermore, Mazda is fully committed to becoming a good corporate citizen in Mexico and creating opportunities to interact with people in the local community. Moving forward, we will continue our efforts to contribute to the economic growth of both Mexico and Japan and further strengthen the amicable relationship between the two countries."

Mazda entered the Mexican market in 2005 and sold 25,454 vehicles in the country in 2012, giving it a market share of 2.6 percent. Total sales of Mazda vehicles in Mexico had reached approximately 150,000 units as of February 2013. The plant currently under construction in Mexico will be one of Mazda's major production facilities and will produce the Mazda2 (Mazda Demio in Japan), Mazda3 (Mazda Axela) among other models. At the start of operations production capacity will be 140,000 units per year. This will be increased to 230,000 units annually in the fiscal year ending March 2016.

2014 Mazda CX-5 2.5 - More Displacement Means More Power

Absolute power may corrupt absolutely, but a little more of it never hurt. In fact, sometimes it can be a big help. Case in point: Mazda’s CX-5. Since its debut as a 2013 model, the CX-5 has impressed us with its styling, assembly, comfort, utility, fuel economy, and, in particular, its dynamics. We’ve characterized that aspect of this compact crossover’s persona as “compelling,” and it helped the utelet to a comparison test victory over five other small SUVs.

Power vs. MPG
The CX-5 was the first full manifestation of Mazda’s so-called Skyactiv Technology, a holistic approach to design focusing on weight reduction, efficiency, and mpg. Power is supplied by a new 2.0-liter DOHC direct-injected aluminum four, and there isn’t a whole lot of it: 155 horsepower, 150 lb-ft of torque.
Hitched to a 3500-pound crossover with a six-speed automatic, this yields very good fuel-economy ratings from the EPA—25 mpg city/31 highway with all-wheel drive—but acceleration is 0-to-60 mph in 9.2 seconds and a quarter-mile sprint in 17.1 at 81 according to our instrumented test runs.
The engineering challenge: pare seconds off those dismal times without excessive mpg sacrifice. The answer: a new 2.5-liter four for the CX-5’s top two trims, one shared with the new Mazda 6 sedan. This one offers 184 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque.
An undersquare design (89-mm bore, 100-mm stroke), the new 2.5 has some interesting engineering details. Its compression ratio is race-engine high at 13:1, but as with the 2.0-liter four, the 2.5 operates on regular unleaded fuel. Also, as a member of the new Skyactiv G engine family, it’s assembled on a line that can accommodate four-cylinder engines that can range from 1.3 to 2.5 liters. What makes this unusual is that the bore centers differ slightly from one displacement to another.

Price and Payoff
Based on a half-day drive in the Texas hill country around Austin, it seems as if the Mazda powertrain team has hit its marks. We estimate 0-to-60 times for 2.5 AWD models in the 8.3–8.4-second range—a nice improvement over the 2.0. And in the real world, it amplifies the CX-5’s exemplary responses, enhancing corner exits, reducing passing exposure time on two-lane roads, and lending more verve in the daily stoplight derby. Just as important, the 2.5 maintains EPA fuel-economy ratings near the top of this class: 25 city/32 highway with front-wheel drive and with 24/30 with all-wheel drive.

In addition to the 2.5-liter four, the 2014 CX-5 receives a number of small detail and equipment updates. Most significant among these is the new Smart City Brake Support (SCBS), which uses laser technology to monitor closing rates and ultimately prevent low-speed (up to 19 mph) collisions by applying the brakes should the driver fail to respond to system warnings.

We can say that the added power that comes with the new 2.5 makes the CX-5’s acceleration consistent with its other dynamic traits. Which adds up to a much more satisfying CX-5.

Car Care Tip of the Week: Use Your Fog Lights!

These beams can cut through water vapor better than regular headlights can, says Rae Tyson, formerly a spokesperson for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Fog lights are mounted low on the grille to prevent bounce-back glare off the mist—which is why high beams are your worst choice.

Car care tip of the week: Rotate your tires every 5,000 to 10,000 miles!

Rotating your tires is the key to maintaining even wear. As a rule of thumb, tire rotations should be done every 5,000 to 10,000 miles, unless otherwise noted in your car’s owner’s manual. Not only will this extend the life of your tires and give you a smooth ride, but it will also keep you safe on the road and save you money.

2013 Honda Accord Sport vs. Toyota Camry SE vs. 2014 Mazda6 Grand Touring

Believe it or not, some midsize sedan buyers view these four- doors as exciting signs of hope, evidence that the fun isn’t over just because kids and jobs now consume 23 hours of the day. Despite their prevalence—at least that of the Accord and Camry, which sold more than 300,000 and 400,000 units in 2012, respectively—the three family sedans here are injected with a shot of sport aimed at enlivening the daily doldrums of commuting, errand running, and passenger hauling. If you can zip from light to light a little quicker or take the freeway on-ramp a bit more aggressively—anything to brighten your day—why not, right?
With that in mind, we gathered the all-new Mazda6 and Honda Accord Sport, as well as the best-selling veteran, the Toyota Camry SE, to see which one delivered the most effective spoonful of sport medicine. Each boasts a stout four-cylinder, a seamless automatic, an athletic body kit, and a sport-tuned chassis, designed to collectively stimulate the senses and soothe the soul.

The SE accounts for about 40 percent of Camry sales, which equates to around 160,000 units annually. SE drivers are treated to the same 2.5-liter, 178-hp, 170-lb-ft I-4 that powers most Camrys not wearing V-6 or Hybrid badging, but the six-speed automatic (the only tranny offered) comes with paddle shifters and an S mode that delivers quicker shifts and downshift throttle blips. Nice. The chassis receives firmer springs and dampers, stiffer lower front-control arms, strut tower and trunk-mounted braces, and 17-inch alloys wearing 215/55 rubber. Outside, there are SE-specific side skirts, mesh upper grille, black headlamp bezels, and rear spoiler. Inside, a three-spoke steering wheel and thicker bolstered sport seats round out the package. Problem is, the aesthetic parts are more appealing than the finished product. Styling, inside and out, was deemed dated, with the slab-sided exterior and ’80s-esque interior drawing criticism. And this Camry is only two years old.
At the track, the SE put down the slowest acceleration numbers of the group, despite being the lightest car at 3207 pounds. Zero to 60 mph came in 8.1 seconds, with another 8.1 required to reach the quarter mile (16.2 at 87.0 mph). At 0.81 g, lateral acceleration, was acceptable, certainly in light of the modest rubber, and the figure-eight run of 27.6 at 0.61 g was back of the pack, but solid nonetheless. The one objective performance test in which the Camry didn’t play the caboose was 60-to-0 braking—it stopped 1 foot shorter than the Mazda.

Over our evaluation loop in Tehachapi, California, the Camry revealed more faults than strengths, notably a stiff ride, numb steering, and a confidence-detracting chassis. Says associate editor Rory Jurnecka, “From the first dip coming out of the parking lot, the Camry makes its stiff ride known. Unfortunately, it’s all for naught—a stiff ride alone does not a sporty car make. It’s amazing that the Mazda rides better on 19s.” Associate editor Scott Evans: “The body rolls much more than the other two, and the suspension doesn’t handle the inertia well. Even a moderately quick steering input gets you thrown around in your seat. Steering is a little too slow to be fun on the back roads and has little feel in it whatsoever.”

On the plus side, the Toyota offers a big back seat, an attractive price tag, excellent visibility, and the best observed fuel economy during our 270-mile trip by 0.1 mpg. The Camry SE has a lot going for it, no doubt, but sporty, engaging, and fun aren’t three of its attributes.

Now, I could just tell you the Accord Sport is a furlong ahead of the Camry and a nose behind the Mazda, but what fun is that? With a 2.4-liter “Earth Dreams” I-4 and the group’s only CVT automatic, the Honda entered the arena as the most powerful (189 hp), but also the heaviest (3324 pounds), the widest (72.8 inches), and the most cavernous (103.6 cubic feet of passenger volume and 15.8 cubic feet of cargo volume). Inside and out, the Accord is a sizable sedan, though it’s still a smidge shorter in length and height than the Mazda and Toyota, respectively. That’s surprising, given that the Honda feels the biggest. But that’s only when it’s standing still.
Floor the throttle, and the CVT quickly pushes the revs into the VTEC sweet spot, propelling the Sport from 0 to 60 in 7.6 seconds and through the quarter mile in 15.9 at 89.8 mph. Unlike the Camry, which always feels its size, the Accord shrinks when the rolling gets brisk, a sense that holds especially true on a winding road, where the Honda’s 0.87 g of lateral grip and 117-foot 60-0 stopping power give it the at-the-limit edge. Evans: “Body is well-controlled, with no abrupt movements. Good grip and good control on rebound; keeps the movements in check.” Further, the electric power steering, while a tad artificial compared with the Mazda’s, serves up a linear helm, and the CVT’s S mode and standard paddle shifters make optimum use of the 2.4’s lively corral. And with an EPA combined rating of 29 mpg, the Accord trails the tops-in-test ’6 by 1 mpg.

The Mazda’s performance stats, however, were completely relevant. Outpacing the Accord’s acceleration numbers by a couple tenths (0-60 in 7.4, quarter mile in 15.7 at 88.6) and splitting the others’ handling figures (0.84 g lat accel, 27.1 at 0.63 figure eight), the Mazda’s objective results placed at or near the top. Subjectively? It quickly earned reserved parking on the pinnacle. Evans: “Engine’s got plenty of zip. Never had to floor it, and it never felt weak or made the car feel heavy. Everything about this car is smooth and fluid. The way the steering comes off center, the way the suspension eases the chassis into corners, the way the throttle picks up, the way the brakes engage, the way it handles transitions. It’s perfect.” Jurnecka: “The steering is sublime, especially for this class. Weighting is just spot-on, and there’s a great amount of feel and precision. ‘Little’ things like this really make a huge difference in how a car feels.” The Mazda imparts a sense of gracefulness and driver-connectedness that is deficient in the others.

Some of that uncanny sense can be attributed to the intimate feel from behind the wheel. The ’6 proved the most comfortable and ergonomically sound, providing the preferred command center whether sitting still and fiddling with the controls or weaving aggressively through a twisty road. The Mazda fits you, not vice versa. The dash layout and interior materials are straightforward and understated, and the 5.8-inch nav screen (standard on GT, optional on Touring) is small by modern standards, but it’s cleanly presented and easy to operate. The back seat, too, was judged tops in comfort and support, though there’s no denying it trails the Camry and Accord in overall roominess.
Nevertheless, the made-in-Japan Mazda6 is the best driver’s car here. To us, there’s no better dose of sport medicine.

Great job Michael and Dennis! Keep up the fantastic work!

"I went in to Tracy Mazda Wednesday afternoon. Was greeted by Michael Hollsted and introduced to Dennis Thiessen who worked his magic to get me the best APR financing, and affordable car payments. Micheal gave me great information about the vehicle I was looking at and convinced me to purchase my vehicle. I went in with the intent to get an idea of what I wanted to purchase and ended up getting a car. The customer service, hospitality, and friendlyness was above and beyond and is hard to come by these days, especially in the car selling business. The general manager Brett was freindly and inviting he works at both Honda, and Mazda. If you are in the market for a new or used car go see Micheal, and Dennis they will do everything in thier power to get you into your dream vehicle for the right amount. Thank you again Micheal Hollsted and Dennis Thiessen for your help and getting me into a brand new 2013 Mazda 3." -Amber B.

2014 Mazda6 Skyactiv-D Wagon

2014_mazda6_skyactiv-d_wagon

Back in October, we compared the relative merits of two new and very good small crossovers: the 2013 Ford Escape and 2013 Mazda CX-5. The CX-5  we tested then had Mazda's 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G engine under its hood, and it managed to just edge out the EcoBoosted Ford despite being down by some 23 horsepower and 34 pound-feet of torque. Had it been available, the 2.5-liter Skyactiv engine that we recently had the opportunity to try out in the 2014 Mazda CX-5; it may have made that comparison even easier to call in the Japanese CUV's favor.

Clearly, if you're in the market for a reasonably sized crossover, the CX-5 should, at the very least, be on your test-drive list. The new engine offering will let buyers opt for a stronger powerplant, with 184 hp and 185 lb-ft on tap. On our second day in Austin's Hill Country – the first was spent quick spinning the 2014 Mazda6 I Sport,  you'll recall – we covered a couple of hundred miles and put the new CX-5 through its paces; here's what we turned up.

Driving Notes

·         The extra half-liter of Skyactiv displacement, resulting in 29 more horsepower and 35 more pound-feet of torque than in the 2.0-liter model, is satisfying in this new CX-5. With the larger engine, the CX-5's 0-60 time falls to about 7.2 seconds (Mazda's estimate) from just under 9 seconds in the 2.0-liter version. Those numbers are borne out in real-world feel, too, where the new CX-5 absolutely feels quicker away from a stoplight and less strained when passing slower folks at highway speeds. The 2.5 engine sounds a bit better, too – offering a mildly enthusiastic growl up around 5,000 rpm and onward.
·         Every other piece of the dynamic driving experience is more or less exactly the same with the 2.5-liter engine as it was with the smaller power plant. Mazda only had CX-5s with the new engine on hand at our drive event in Austin, and it's possible that driving both versions, back-to-back, could reveal some mild handling differences. But with only a few months separating our last seat time in the 2.0-liter car from this drive, we feel safe saying that the more-potent CX-5 is every bit the nimble handler as its slightly lighter sibling.

·         With the added thrust and equal handling taken as read then, what exactly is the give/get situation relative to the smaller-engine CX-5? The larger-engine vehicle gains about 100 pounds, trim-for-trim. The 2.0-liter is the only 2014 CX-5 that can be had with Mazda's very good six-speed manual transmission, meanwhile, though product planners hinted that we may be seeing a 2.5L/6MT combo later in the model year. (We know from the Mazda6 that the engine and manual transmission work nicely together.) Impressively, the 2.5L CX-5 only loses one mile per gallon in the city versus the smaller displacement engine (25 versus 26 mpg), and the highway ratings stay exactly the same (32 mpg). Towing capacity stays steady at a modest 2,000-pound maximum for all CX-5 models.

30 More Horsepower Makes All the Difference!

557721_10152530145265363_161693393_n

"We'd love it even more with another 30 horsepower onboard, but the Mazda CX-5 is still a fun drive despite its meager engine power."

That's what we wrote after our 2013 Mazda CX-5 road test with the 2.0-liter Skyactiv four-cylinder engine. For 2014, Mazda has answered the call by giving Touring and Grand Touring versions of the 2014 Mazda CX-5 a new 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 184 hp. That's exactly 29 more hp than the 2.0-liter engine, which remains standard on the 2014 CX-5 Sport.
Even more important is the new engine's extra 35 pound-feet of torque. We're driving a 2014 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring around trendy Austin, Texas, where rush hour has become a competitive event as everyone makes a dash for their homes in the suburbs. Right away, that additional grunt helps us catch holes in traffic that would have been off limits in last year's CX-5.
CX-5 Gets Muscle From the Mazda 6
The new 2.5-liter four-cylinder also bears the name Skyactiv, since like the 2.0-liter, it's part of Mazda's new family of gasoline engines that use direct injection, high compression and low-friction materials to achieve solid performance and high fuel economy while running on plain old 87 octane fuel.
We already sampled a version of this engine in the 2014 Mazda 6, which is closely related to the CX-5 beneath the skin. Their common platform architecture was originally designed for the sedan, but it's a quirk of U.S. marketing that we got the SUV before we got the car.
In the Mazda 6, the 2.5-liter engine is offered with a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission, but if you want a manual in your 2014 CX-5, you'll have to drop back to the 2.0-liter Sport model, as the automatic is standard with the 2.5-liter engine. It's too bad, because the manual is startlingly good. However, Mazda officials tell us the take rate for the three-pedal CX-5 is a disappointing 7 percent.
Quick Enough With the Automatic
That's no criticism of the six-speed automatic, though. It's geared the same for both engines, and in our all-wheel-drive CX-5 2.5, it's perceptive and comes up with downshifts quickly when we need to pass.
You still won't be towing horse trailers with the 2014 Mazda CX-5 (indeed, towing capacity is unchanged at 2,000 pounds), but the extra torque is evident and appreciated in the Texas Hill Country.
Our non-certified digital wristwatch suggests a 0-60-mph time in the low 8-second range is within its grasp. That jibes with our seat-of-the-pants impression that the 2014 Mazda CX-5 2.5 is at least a second quicker than the 2013 CX-5 2.0, which ran a 9.7-second 0-60 (or 9.5 seconds with a foot of rollout) during Edmunds testing. For its part, Mazda claims the AWD CX-5 2.5 will run a 7.8-second 0-60, while the lighter front-drive version is reportedly capable of 7.2. If true, the 2014 CX-5 2.5 would be as quick as a 2.0-liter EcoBoost-equipped 2013 Ford Escape, but we won't know for sure until we test one.
Mazda still won't confirm that it's going to offer its even more potent 2.2-liter diesel engine in the U.S.-market CX-5, but we were mightily impressed by the diesel CX-5 prototypes we drove some months back, and that engine is already on sale in European CX-5s. The diesel will be offered in our Mazda 6 later this year.
Fuel Economy Still Class-Leading
Mileage is quite good on the 2014 Mazda CX-5 2.5, likely due in no small part to the 2.5-liter engine's lower torque peak. Its 185 lb-ft come together at just 3,250 rpm compared to a 4,000-rpm threshold for the 2.0-liter engine's 150 lb-ft. The upshot is that the bigger engine doesn't have to work as hard.
Even as our drive takes us down a series of winding roads, our actual mileage stays close to the 24 mpg city EPA rating for the CX-5 2.5 AWD. And we'd expect to come much closer to its 30 mpg highway rating during calm cruising on level highways. The combined rating is 26 mpg.
That's a pretty good number for a 3,500-pound crossover SUV, and indeed, EPA fuel economy ratings for the 2.0-liter and the 2.5-liter are quite close. An AWD automatic-equipped CX-5 with the 2.0-liter is rated 25 city/31 highway/28 combined mpg. In real-world driving conditions, that difference is likely to be a wash.
Meanwhile, the front-wheel-drive CX-5 2.5 is rated 25 city/32 highway/27 combined mpg, while its 2.0-liter equivalent is rated at 26 city/32 highway/29 combined.
For the moment, the Mazda leads the compact crossover class in fuel economy, as you'd have to step down to something smaller like the Buick Encore (28 mpg combined) or 2013 Nissan Juke  (29 combined) to beat those numbers. Front-drive versions of the CR-V, Escape (with its 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine) and 2013 Toyota RAV4 are rated 26 mpg combined.
Collision Avoidance System Is New for 2014
Aside from the engine, Mazda is offering a new safety feature, SCBS (Smart City Brake Support) as part of the 2014 CX-5's Technology package. This package costs an additional $1,625 on our CX-5 Grand Touring. You can also get it for $1,485 on the Touring model, but you have to buy it in combination with the $1,130 Bose audio and moonroof package (these items are standard on the Grand Touring).
Basically, SCBS is a low-cost collision mitigation system that helps you avoid rear-ending other vehicles when you're traveling between 3 mph and 19 mph: in other words, when you're stuck in heavy traffic. Using a windshield-mounted laser sensor, SCBS can sense an obstacle and prime the brakes to shorten brake-caliper piston travel and minimize braking time when the driver hits the binders. If the driver doesn't brake, the SCBS brakes independently.
That Technology package also includes a TomTom-based navigation system, HID adaptive headlights, rain-sensing wipers and an auto-dimming mirror. It's a worthwhile upgrade for the headlights alone, though this option group, along with our test vehicle's $100 rear bumper guard, results in a bottom line of $30,695. If you don't care about the Grand Touring's leather upholstery, you could load up a CX-5 Touring model with the same options and land at $29,375.
On the other end of the spectrum, a base, manual-transmission CX-5 Sport starts at $21,990. If you're on a tight budget, that model is still worth considering, one reason being its inventory of standard equipment, ranging from push-button start to 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels with quiet-riding P225/65R17 Yokohama all-season tires. Of course, you can also get these tires on the Touring and then you won't have to go without the extra power.
Still the Athlete of the Small SUV Class
In contrast, the 225/55R19 Toyo tires on our 2014 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring aren't as serene over Texas highways, and the crossover's ordinarily compliant ride occasionally becomes jarring over rough pavement. Still, it's tough to argue with the CX-5's impressive balance on roads with tight curves. It's easily one of the best-handling compact SUVs on the road today.
Inside, the front seats are reasonably comfortable and supportive, and rear seat room is reasonable for two adults, less reasonable for three. The rear cargo area, easily accessed through the large hatch, is a generous 34.1 cubic feet.
Instruments and controls aren't fancy but are intuitive and attractively designed. Bluetooth is standard in Touring and Grand Touring models (optional in Sport), and for 2014, Mazda has added SMS text-to-speech capability for MAP-enabled smartphones.
Horsepower Fixes Everything
There's no denying that the compact sport-ute segment is a tough league to play in, as it's filled with some of the best-selling vehicles in the country, including the CR-V, Escape, RAV4, Kia Sorento and the redesigned Hyundai Santa Fe Sport.
The 2013 Mazda CX-5 was a legitimate player in this class, too, offering a spacious interior, sporty handling and outstanding fuel economy. The trouble was that its 2.0-liter engine, although smooth and willing, felt taxed when accelerating up long grades, especially on the heavier all-wheel-drive model.
Now Mazda has addressed this issue, adding more power without dragging down the compact crossover's class-leading fuel economy. Understandably, company officials predict that the new 2.5-liter engine will be popular, with 70 percent of 2014 CX-5 buyers opting for either the Touring or Grand Touring.
And unless you require a third seat or serious towing capacity, the 2014 Mazda CX-5 2.5 may indeed be all the SUV you'll ever need. With loaded versions priced lower than a top-of-the-line CR-V or Escape, the 2.5-equipped CX-5 is a relative bargain among compact crossovers.

Get a Glimpse of the 2015 Mazda 3

2015_mazda_3

Mazda's new Kodo design language is set to quickly spread across the automaker's entire lineup, judging by these spy shots of the next-generation Mazda3 that show some very familiar styling cues. No matter, we're impressed with what Mazda has done on the CX-5 crossover and Mazda6 sedan in terms of design, and we're happy to see the C-segment hatchback ditching the smile-for-a-mile Nagare design.

Mazda's Newest Race Cars Are Powered By Chicken Guts

http://blogs-images.forbes.com/joannmuller/files/2013/01/Mazda6-diesel-race-car.jpg

Now before you start alerting the animal rights groups, you should know that these fats come from the waste left over from Tyson Foods‘ processing plants. “We’re not taking food off the table or feedstock away from animals. This would end up in a landfill,” said James O’Sullivan, president and chief executive of Mazda North American Operations.

Mazda has a long history of using its involvement in motorsports to try out new technologies. “We’re using the racetrack as an R&D facility,” said John Doonan, director of motorsports for the company. It was through racing, for instance, that Mazda discovered a gear box problem with the MX-5 Miata. It also found an issue with ball joints on the RX-8. Both problems were sent back to Japan for an engineering fix before the cars went on sale to consumers.

The 24-hour race at Daytona is important to Mazda for two reasons: it’s a challenging durability test for Mazda’s new SKYACTIV-D clean diesel engine, which will debut later this year on the redesigned Mazda6 sedan. It’s also an opportunity to try out the renewable, synthetic diesel fuel produced by Dynamic Fuels, a 50-50 joint venture between Tyson Foods and Syntroleum.

Dynamic’s $150 million refinery, which opened in October 2010 near Baton Rouge, La., can process up to 1.5 million pounds of meat remnants per day, and produce 75 million gallons of synthetic diesel fuel every year. In 2011, it contracted with the U.S. Navy to provide fuel for a new fleet of green ships. The fuel is also being tested in shuttle buses operated by Alamo and National Car Rental.

One of the benefits of renewable, synthetic diesel is that  it can easily be distributed through gas stations, using existing  diesel infrastructure, according to Dynamic Fuels. Because it is ultra-clean, it can be used as a blending fuel to help conventional diesel meet tougher government standards. It may also appeal to operators of fleet vehicles and city buses seeking to reduce emissions.  Mazda is the first car manufacturer to use it.

The high-performance engines in the Mazdas racing at Daytona ( 400-hp, 450 lb.-foot torque ) use 60 percent of the stock components found in the diesel Mazda6 coming to market this year. It’s a tough time to be launching a mid-sized sedan — all of the major players in the field have just introduced dramatically upgraded models, many with optional hybrid-electric powertrains. Mazda’s diesel offering will help set it apart. Currently, only the Volkswagen Passat is available with a diesel option, although General Motors is promising to bring a diesel version of the Chevrolet Malibu to market.
